Former Deputy Subject Of Manhunt, Considered Armed And Dangerous

(CBS) –The manhunt for a former LaSalle County deputy accused of several crimes, including kidnapping, has been suspended until Thursday.

More than 80 police officers were searching for Lowell Ambler, 46, after he was seen Wednesday afternoon camping out in rural LaSalle County with a stolen car parked nearby, Sheriff Thomas Templeton tells CBS 2's Audrina Bigos.

Ambler fled and has not been seen since. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Police in southwest suburban Plainfield said Ambler was likely the suspect who carjacked a resident at gunpoint Wednesday morning. The department previously released a bulletin identifying him as a wanted fugitive.

Ambler, of Mendota, was out on bond and facing charges of aggravated kidnapping and home invasion. An arrest warrant was issued Monday for a violation, authorities say.

Ambler – a hunter familiar with the rural area where he was last seen -- spent about 15 years as a deputy with the LaSalle County Sheriff's Department, Templeton says.

Templeton says Ambler has dealt with many family issues before his recent spiral.

Authorities were expected to resume their search early Thursday, the sheriff says.
