Man Shot, Killed On North Side

(CBS/STMW) -- A man was shot to death Saturday afternoon on the North Side.

William Lewis, 28, was standing on the street in the 1300 block of West Devon Avenue about 3:20 p.m. when someone approached on foot, produced a weapon and shot him in the back, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Lewis, of the 4700 block of North Hermitage Avenue, was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 3:58 p.m., authorities said.

49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore was walking on the block at the time of the shooting according to a release from his office.

"This shooting is a tragedy. Not because it was witnessed by the alderman, but because yet another life has been extinguished in a seemingly never-ending cycle of senseless violence. What makes this even more tragic, is that the murder appeared to be at the hands of a boy who may have been younger than my own 17-year-old son," Moore said in the release.

Police said the shooting may have been gang-related.
