Man Shot, Critically Injured In Logan Square Carjacking

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 49-year-old man was in critical condition on Thursday, after two carjackers shot him and stomped on his head in the Logan Square neighborhood on Wednesday.

Lionel Vazquez was sitting in his Chevy Tahoe around 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 2000 block of North Richmond Street, when two men approached and ordered him out of the vehicle. One of the men was wielding a handgun.

When Vazquez got out of his SUV, the gunman shot him four times. The victim's family said the two men also stomped on his face before driving off with his vehicle.

Vazquez crawled to a nearby alley, where friends called for help. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was in critical condition on Thursday.

His family said Vazquez is expected to survive. He underwent surgery to have a bullet removed from his chest, and was removed from a ventilator on Thursday morning. His family said he was talking, and they hoped he will be able to return home in four or five days.

Neighbors said the area where Vazquez was attacked is a quiet community, and they find the incident hard to digest.

Ed Corcoran said he doesn't remember hearing gunshots.

"I vaguely remember hearing a loud thing at some point, but that's the kind of stuff you tune out," he said.

No one was in custody as of late Thursday morning. The stolen vehicle is a beige 1999 Chevy Tahoe, with license plate K489983.
