Man Killed In Police-Involved Shooting In Chatham

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A second person was fatally shot by police Sunday night in the South Side Chatham neighborhood, about two hours after the first police-involved shooting in East Garfield Park.

About 9 p.m., two males were shooting at each other in the 900 block of East 80th Street, according to a preliminary police statement. One of the males and two other people — a male and female — were shot.

Police approached on foot to investigate, and were confronted by the male who had shot the other male, police said. He pointed a gun at them, and officers ordered him to drop his weapon, police said. When he refused, an officer shot him.

The male was later pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

The male and female who were shot were taken to a hospital, where both were in good condition, police said. The other male was shot in the head and taken to a hospital, where his condition was not immediately known.

Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Larry Merritt said he was notified of the shooting near 79th and Ingleside about 9:40 p.m. The IPRA investigates all police-involved shootings.
