Man Killed In Joliet Crash Involving Off-Duty Cop

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 24-year-old man was killed early Thursday morning, when he drove into the path of an oncoming SUV, driven by an off-duty police sergeant.

The officer was headed north on Larkin Avenue in his personal vehicle, around 3:30 a.m., when a Pontiac Grand Prix heading south made a left turn at Dellmar Avenue, right into the path of the sergeant's GMC Yukon.

Firefighters had to cut Rashad Stinson free from the wreckage. He was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The sergeant was taken to the hospital in serious condition, with a broken leg and ankle.

Police said there has been no indication so far that alcohol was a factor in the wreck. Toxicology tests will determine that later.
