Man Killed In Fiery Rollover Crash In Gary

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One person was killed in a fiery crash on Interstate 80/94 in Gary, Indiana, early Friday, and inbound traffic was tied up for hours as police investigated and cleared the scene.

Witnesses told Indiana State Police a Ford SUV was driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed in the eastbound lanes of I-80/94 around 1 a.m., when it left the road and slammed into an unoccupied disabled car on the left shoulder near Chase Street.

Police said the SUV was launched into the air, and rolled several times, before coming to a stop in the middle of the interstate, where it burst into flames.

Several people stopped, and tried to get to the driver, but were not successful.

The Lake County Coroner's Office said 25-year-old Nickolas Alderfer, of Hebron, died in the crash, and suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation.

Police said both vehicles involved in the crash were "completely burnt."

All inbound lanes of I-80/94 were shut down until 4 a.m., when the outer shoulder and far right lane were opened to traffic. All lanes had reopened by 7:30 a.m.
