Man Killed In ATV Crash On Southwest Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 49-year-old man was killed Tuesday night when he crashed an all-terrain vehicle into a car in the Clearing neighborhood.

Police said the man was riding a four-wheeler in the street around 10:30 p.m., when he ran a stop sign at the corner of 62nd Street and Austin Avenue, and crashed into an SUV.

The victim was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Neighbors said the victim was well known in the community, and was frequently seen riding the ATV.

"You see him up and down, but he's really cautious. I mean, he's never speeding on the four-wheeler. Like I said, he picks up the kids. He was an awesome guy," Diana LaPorte said.

Neighbors said he was popular with the children, and will be missed.

"I just hope everybody remembers this guy as a loyal guy, a friend, a father, a person you confide in," Zach Nabb said.

Authorities have not released the victim's name.

It was not immediately clear if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
