Man Killed After Crashing Into Bus On West Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 59-year-old man died Sunday morning when his car struck a school bus in the Austin neighborhood.

The bus driver said he was driving eight people, including children, to a church service in East Chicago, Indiana, when a car hit the bus as he was driving through the intersection of Congress Parkway and Independence Boulevard around 8 a.m.

"I did see the vehicle going at a high rate of speed and it hit me on the side," Kevin Menjivar said. "First I checked if everybody was okay on the bus, and then I got off, and I went to go check on the person, but the person was not responsive."

Police said the 59-year-old man driving the car was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A 3-year-old girl was taken to Stroger Hospital after bumping her forehead in the crash, but she already has been released from the hospital.
