Man In Critical Condition After Chasing Down Car Thief

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man is in critical condition after trying to stop a teenage boy from stealing his car Saturday morning in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

The incident occurred about 11 a.m. in the 5100 block South Lake Park Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Ana Pacheco said. A 17-year-old boy saw a car running unattended and stole it, she said. Meanwhile, the owner of the vehicle, a 34-year-old man, gave chase - hanging from the driver's side of the vehicle and pulling on the steering wheel in an attempt to stop the suspect, Pacheco said.

Soon after, the car collided with another vehicle, launching the owner off of the driver's side of the car. He eventually landed underneath another parked vehicle, police said. Officers arrived on the scene a short time later and took the teenager into custody, police said.

Meanwhile, the man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Pacheco said.

Charages were pending against the 17-year-old Saturday afternoon, police said.
