Man Gets 30 Years For Killing Infant Daughter, Soliciting Murder

MAYWOOD, Ill. (STMW) -- A Cicero man who pleaded guilty to the 2010 murder of his three-week-old daughter and trying to hire someone to kill his girlfriend's relatives has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Jorge Galvez, 24, pleaded guilty Wednesday to killing Lilliana Galvez during a hearing in Maywood, according to a statement from the Cook County State's Attorney's office. Judge Noreen Love sentenced him to 20 years in prison for the murder.

During a separate hearing Thursday, Galvez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder, and Judge Domenica Stephenson sentenced him to an additional 10 years, the state's attorney's office said.

Galvez and his girlfriend were in their Cicero home with three-week-old Lilliana on March 19, 2010, prosecutors said. When the infant woke up crying early the next morning, her mother left her with Galvez while she went to prepare a bottle.

Galvez became angry about the girl's crying and dropped her on the floor, prosecutors said. He then threw her into her crib, at which point she became unresponsive.

Galvez and the girl's mother then went to sleep and woke up nine hours later, at which point they called 911, according to the statement. They initially told police the Lilliana was fine when she went to sleep and that they woke up to find her dead in the crib, prosecutors said.

Galvez eventually admitted in a videotaped statement that he threw the baby but said he did not mean to kill her, according to the state's attorney's office.

While he was awaiting trial for Lilliana's murder at the Cook County Jail, an investigation revealed that Galvez tried to hire someone to kill some of his girlfriend's relatives, who he believed were attempting to turn her against him, prosecutors said. He was charged with conspiracy to commit murder on July 15, 2010.

Galvez will serve his sentences for both charged consecutively, for a total of 30 years in prison, the state's attorney's office said.
