Man Dies After Chasing Ball On CTA Red Line Tracks In Loop

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man found dead on the CTA Red Line tracks near the Harrison stop in the South Loop early Monday fell on the third rail while chasing a ball.

The man — thought to be in his 50s or 60s — was found unresponsive by officers about 12:35 a.m. on the southbound tracks at the Harrison station, police said.

Preliminary information indicates he had been trying to retrieve a large ball that fell on the tracks when he hit the electrically charged third rail, authorities said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed the fatality, but did not release additional details.

Area Central detectives are conducting a death investigation.
