Man Found Dead After Fire In Cicero
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 23-year-old man was found dead in the attic of a building in west suburban Cicero, after firefighters extinguished a fire early Friday morning.
Cicero town spokesman Ray Hanania said the fire started around 1:30 a.m. in the back of a three-story building in the 5000 block of West 30th Street.
Firefighters quickly put the fire out, but found the body of a 23-year-old man in the attic. The man's name was not being released as of Friday morning.
It was not immediately clear if the man died as a result of the fire.
A smoke detector did alert residents to the fire, and several people fled the building.
Fire investigators said they are "99 percent sure" the fire was not the result of arson, and appeared to be an accident, according to Hanania.
"The precise cause is still being confirmed and the investigation is continuing," he said in an email.
The building appeared to be overcrowded, and the first floor unit had been divided into three units, according to Hanania.
Six residents were being provided with temporary shelter.
"The Town is assisting and has placed the six people at the Cindy Lyn Motel for eight nights until they can make arrangements for permanent relocation," Hanania said.
