Man Fatally Shot Near Library In Humboldt Park

(STMW) -- A man was shot and killed near a public library in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side on Monday afternoon, according to police.

About 2:40 p.m., the 23-year-old and another person got out of a vehicle parked in the 700 block of North Kedzie when they were approached by three other people, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said. The Richard M. Daley-West Humboldt Chicago Public Library branch is at 733 N. Kedzie.

Two of the three people then opened fire, striking the 23-year-old in the side. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Zala said. The other person from the vehicle wasn't hurt.

The three attackers ran away southbound on Kedzie, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

The library was expected to remain closed Tuesday and reopen Wednesday.
