Man Fatally Shot By Dolton Police During Armed Robbery

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in south suburban Dolton shot and killed a man Sunday morning, when he allegedly robbed someone at gunpoint outside a gas station.

Two officers responded to a call about a man with a mask and a gun robbing the Shell gas station on Sibley Boulevard just off the Bishop Ford Freeway shortly after 5:15 a.m., and saw a man aiming a handgun at the clerk.

The officers drew their weapons and told the man to drop his weapon. That's when he turned and pointed the gun at the officers, who shot him at least once, police said.

The man has been identified as 30-year-old Donte Johnson. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson's family acknowledged he was known to carry a gun, but they denied he pointed a weapon at police.
