Man Falls Through Ice On Fox River While Fleeing Police

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man tried evading police by crossing ice on the Fox River Sunday, but fell through instead.

The incident happened at 10:30 a.m. after patrol officers observed a man who had outstanding arrest warrants near the Chicago Street train depot, Elgin police said in a statement. A foot chase ensued after police tried to apprehend the suspect, police said.

During the chase, the man tried crossing the Fox River, but the ice gave way and he broke through into the river, police said.

Officers were able to rescue the man after one of them threw a life saver ring from the National Street Bridge.

Melvin Ramsey, 20, was taken to a hospital to treat minor injuries and was later released to police.

Ramsey, of the 200 block of Jewett in Elgin, was charged with a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.

He is due in Kane County bond court Monday for Sunday's charges and his outstanding warrant charges from previous cases, police said.
