Man Dies When Stolen Car Slams Into Car-Carrier On South Side

(STMW) -- A man in a stolen car was killed in a crash with a semi truck Friday afternoon in the Ashburn neighborhood on the South Side, authorities said.

The car and semi collided about 2 p.m. near 87th Street and Western Avenue, Fire Media spokesman Juan Hernandez said. The truck was a car carrier.

The car caught fire with a man trapped inside, Hernandez said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not confirm the fatality.

It was believed the man was the only person in the car, Hernandez said. The truck driver and two other people who were trying to help at the scene all refused medical treatment.

A police source said the car was stolen.

As of 4 p.m., the intersection remained closed while authorities investigate the crash. The No. 87 87th Street buses were temporarily rerouted via 87th, Damen, 83rd, California, and 87th, according to the CTA.

The police Major Accidents Investigation Unit is investigating.
