GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- A portion of I-80 in Gary was shut down for several hours early this morning after a 54-year-old man was killed while walking in traffic, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.

Indiana State Police say it happened at about 11:30 p.m. Friday near the Clark Road overpass on I-80. A 48-year-old Michigan woman said she was heading east when a passenger in her car yelled that someone was walking in her lane.

She said she slammed on the brakes but was unable to avoid the man. He was thrown into another traffic lane and according to police, was run over by multiple unknown vehicles that kept going after hitting the man.

Police do not know what the man was doing walking on I-80. He is identified as 54-year-old Charles Maguire, who lived in Gary and had a fairly extensive criminal background including burglary and theft.
