Man Dies After Being Pulled From Lake Michigan In Hyde Park

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man died after he was pulled from Lake Michigan in the Hyde Park neighborhood Friday night.

Police and fire crews pulled a 27-year-old man from the lake near the 5700 block of South Lake Shore Drive about 10:40 p.m., authorities said.

Joe Cherry, of the 1300 block of South Fairfiled Avenue, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:42 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Witnesses told police they saw him take off his shirt and jump into the water, but that he failed to surface, police said.
