Police: Man Dead After Shooting Along Safe Passage Route In Austin

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 21-year-old man was shot to death Monday morning along a Safe Passage route in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said.

The man was shot multiple times in the chest just after 8:20 a.m. in the 300 block of North Central Avenue, according to Chicago Police.

He was taken to Loyola University Hospital in critical condition where he later died, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office did not immediately confirm the death.

The block where the shooting happened lies on a Safe Passage route for Ellington Elementary School at 243 N. Parkside Ave., according to the Chicago Public Schools website. The scene of the shooting is less than two blocks from the school.

Police believe the shooting is gang-related.
