Man Critically Injured After Driving Into Calumet River

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 36-year-old man was taken to a hospital in critical condition early Wednesday after he drove a car into the Calumet River in the South Deering neighborhood on the Far South Side.

About 3 a.m., the car drove into the Calumet River near East 122nd Street and South Stony Island Avenue, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.

The driver was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, said Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Walter Schroeder. CFD divers went into the water and found he was the only occupant of the vehicle, and no other injuries were reported.

Police said the man was not cooperating with investigators.

Additional information was not immediately available.
