Man Charged With Shooting Death Of Teen Boy In Portage Park

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy in the Portage Park neighborhood last week.

Antwan Elliot, 21, was charged with single counts of first-degree murder, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card, police announced Monday night.

Police arrested Elliot after they found him to be in possession of a handgun during a traffic stop in the 2600 block of North Laramie, police said.

About 12:50 p.m. on March 15, Giovanni Matos was walking with two friends in the 5800 block of West Patterson when a gray, four-door car pulled up and an argument ensued between the occupants of the vehicle and Matos' group, police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said at the time.

A male then exited the vehicle and fired several shots, police said.

Matos, of the 5500 block of West Henderson, was shot in the head and his friends ran away, authorities said. The shooter jumped back in the vehicle, which sped away. Matos was pronounced dead at 4:39 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.

Elliot, of the 1600 block of North Oak Park, is expected to appear in bond court Tuesday.
