Man Charged With Shooting At Officers In Andersonville

(STMW) -- A shoplifting suspect was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot at two officers who were trying to arrest him in the North Side Andersonville neighborhood on Saturday evening.

About 8 p.m., officers saw 33-year-old Thomas Thompson carrying out a theft at a store in the 5400 block of North Clark, police said.

Thompson allegedly fired a shot at officers while they tried to arrest him, but no one was struck, police said.

Two officers were injured during a struggle with Thompson, police said. They were taken to hospitals with injuries that weren't thought to be life-threatening.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

Thompson, of the 6000 block of North Ridge, is charged with felony counts of attempted first-degree murder, disarming a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance, police said. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of retail theft.

He is scheduled to appear in bond court on Sunday.

The Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings, is looking into the case, a spokesman for the agency said.
