Man Charged With Murder In Fatal Back Of The Yards Shooting

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man has been charged with murder in connection with a shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood that left a man dead and a woman wounded last April.

Otis Harriel, 47, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery in connection with the April 26 shooting that killed 21-year-old Martarvian Emery and wounded a 19-year-old woman, police said early Friday.

About 1:15 a.m., Harriel was in the rear of a home in the 5400 block of South Winchester when he fired a handgun into the second story of the building, police said. Emery, who was inside the kitchen area at the time, was shot in the chest.

He was pronounced dead at the scene 15 minutes later and his home address was not known, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A 19-year-old woman who was also in the home was shot in the leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where her condition stabilized, police said.

Harriel, of the 1400 block of South Canal, is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday.
