Man Charged With Murder For West Side Hit-And-Run

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man has been charged with intentionally striking and killing another man with an SUV early Saturday in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Darrell Cooper, 41, is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident, police said.

Artiz McBride, 20, was struck by the SUV while he was crossing the street about 12:45 a.m. Saturday in the 0 – 100 block of South Central Avenue, authorities said.

The SUV then sped away, police said.

McBride, of the 0 – 100 block of North Long Avenue, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead at 2:23 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An autopsy performed Saturday found McBride died of multiple injuries he suffered when he was struck by the vehicle and his death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.

Cooper, of the 0-100 block of North Lorel Avenue, was ordered held in lieu of $750,000 bond, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office. His next court date is scheduled for May 16.
