Man Charged For Breaking In To Crystal Lake Homes, Injuring Residents

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (STMW) -- A Wisconsin man was charged after police say he broke in to a home and injured its residents early Saturday in northwest suburban Crystal Lake.

Erasmo William Herrera, 20, was charged with two felony counts of criminal trespass to a residence, a felony and misdemeanor count each of criminal damage to property and one misdemeanor count of battery, according to a statement from Crystal Lake police.

About 3:45 a.m. Saturday, residents of a home in the 200 block of McHenry Avenue in Crystal Lake were woken up after they heard someone break in to the house, police said.

The residents approached the intruder—later identified as Herrera— and got in to a brief, "violent" fight with him, police said. Herrera ran off and tried to force his way in to another home in the neighborhood but was unsuccessful, police said.

He then approached a third home, entered through the unlocked front door and exited out the back, police said.

Officers found Herrera in the backyard of the third home and had a brief struggle with him before he was arrested, police said.

The residents who Herrera fought with were treated for their injuries at the scene by the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department.

Erasmo, of Franklin, Wisc.—about 56 miles north of Crystal Lake—was ordered held on $15,000 bond Monday at McHenry County Jail in Woodstock, but was released after he posted bond, police said.

His next court date was not immediately known.
