Man Briefly Escapes Custody After Court Appearance On Far South Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Cook County Jail detainee got a brief taste of freedom after a court appearance Wednesday morning.

Cook County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sofia Ansari said 21-year-old Brandon Crosby had appeared in court at 727 E. 111th Street in the Pullman neighborhood, and was supposed to be getting onto a bus to be taken back to Cook County Jail when he fled while handcuffed and wearing County-issued jail clothing.

"Our deputies pursued him on foot, and Chicago police officers apprehended him near 111th and Cottage Grove without incident," she said.

Ansari said Crosby was free for about 10 minutes before he was captured.

Crosby had been in court on a charge of aggravated battery-discharge of a firearm charge. He was being held on $150,000 bail. Ansari said more charges could be filed relating to the escape attempt.

Ansari said Crosby is believed to have been from the area around downstate Rantoul.
