Man, 88, Dies After Chatham House Fire

CHICAGO (STMW) -- An 88-year-old man died a day after a Sunday evening fire at his Chatham neighborhood home on the South Side.

Crews responded about 4 p.m. to the blaze in the basement and first floor of the home in the 7700 block of South Champlain Avenue, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Carlton Hill was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center and later transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he died at 5:58 p.m. Monday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The fire was extinguished in less than an hour.

It might have been electrical, but the exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation, fire officials said Monday night. No foul play is suspected.
