Elderly Man Killed In South Side Drive-By Shooting

(CBS) – An elderly man was fatally wounded Thursday in a drive-by shooting in the West Englewood neighborhood.

Chicago police say the victim was standing in the 6800 block of South Hermitage around 4:45 p.m. when a vehicle drove by and someone inside fired shots. The elderly man was shot in the head; he was not the intended target, police say.

LaShyra Westrn attempted to help the senior by putting pressure on his wound.

"He was just in the way of a bullet," she tells CBS 2's Jeremy Ross.

The victim was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the victim was 77, but others tells CBS 2 the man was 78.
