Mail Carriers Battle Brutal Cold To Make Deliveries

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Some people have to work today.

WBBM's Steve Miller followed a U.S. Mail carrier as he made his appointed rounds through the snow and the brutal cold.

"Rain, sleet or snow - but they never said anything about this brutal cold weather," said Mitchell Rice.

Rice has been a mail carrier for 20 years.

"I have heard that it has been worse but as far as I've been here for the 20 years, yeah. This is cold."

His route is in Rogers Park. It takes about 5 hours to complete - most of it in the cold, walking door to door.

He says there is one good thing about the sub-zero temperature.

"It makes you move fast."

A dog barks on the other side of a door.

"I think one of these days that dog is going to get out and chase me.

WBBM: Not today, though, I don't think.

"Today - I think he'd give up."
