She was hit in the lower back and transported to Presence St. Francis Hospital in critical condition. The woman has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

Witnesses describe the car as a gray Nissan Altima that sped off. Police say it appears the victim was not targeted, but the shooting remains under investigation.

"I am feeling a little uneasy, especially at night," said student Ann Jakuvczak. "This was 9:15 so it's not too late."

"We do have to be aware of the fact that this is Rogers Park and it's not always the most safe area because Rogers Park isn't all Loyola campus," said Liah Sichon.

The university says it is working to increase its 8-RIDE transportation this weekend and putting additional vans in service.
