Local Kid Comedian Going For Laughs On 'America's Got Talent'
(CBS) -- A 12-year-old stand-up comic from St. Charles was preparing to head to New York City this weekend to showcase his talents at a taping of "America's Got Talent."
WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports Trevor Burke, a 6th grader at Wredling Middle School, sounded pretty self-confident about his appearance, but he said he's still a little nervous.
"It's pretty big, so yeah, I am kind of," he said.
He'll get 90 seconds to do a comedy routine.
I only have a small amount of time to grab the crowd and give them good material," Trevor said. "It's going to be something that hits like a rocket; just really fast, yet so exhilarating."
His father Joe Burke said he remembers Trevor's first talent show about three years ago.
"He told me in the car on the way home, he said, 'Dad, I got a feeling on stage like I've never had before,'" Joe said. "I told him, I said 'People take drugs to feel like that. You only have to tell a joke.'"
Joe said he helps his son craft his jokes after Trevor comes up with a subject for his routine.
"When he learned about foot-and-mouth disease at school, he came home and he said, 'Dad, I just learned about foot-and-mouth,' and he pointed at me and said, 'There's something there,'" Joe said. "And I said, 'Yeah, there is. What other goofy diseases are there?' and the wife yells, 'Mad cow.'"
And mad cow became the crux of a joke.
