Man Dropped Off At Courthouse With Gunshot Wounds Dies

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A driver who claimed she was being chased and shot at by someone in another vehicle stopped outside the Cook County Courthouse in Little Village on Friday morning and dropped off a wounded passenger, who later died.

The woman pulled up outside the courthouse near 26th and California in a black SUV with a man inside who had suffered a gunshot wound, a witness told the Chicago Sun-Times.

A witness said she overheard the driver telling police she had been chased for several blocks by a car that was shooting at her. She went to the courthouse instead of the hospital hoping the shooters would not follow.

Chicago Police said the shooting happened about 11:12 a.m. in the 3100 block of South Rockwell.

A 26-year-old woman driver and a 28-year-old man were in the vehicle when a man in another vehicle fired multiple shots at them, police said.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt confirmed that paramedics transported a male with a gunshot wound from the courthouse to Mount Sinai Hospital at 11:14 a.m.

Police said the man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and was in critical condition.

A spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed the man died, but had no further details available.

No one was in custody as of about 12:30 p.m.

Police roped off part of California in front of the courthouse with crime scene tape Monday morning while officers investigated.
