Levine: Kyle Schwarber Envisions Quick Return From Knee Strain

By Bruce Levine--

MESA, Ariz. (CBS) -- Cubs outfielder/catcher Kyle Schwarber reported to the clubhouse Friday morning feeling better a day after suffering a left knee strain in a Cactus League contest. Schwarber left Thursday's contest after making a throw and feeling some soreness in the knee area.

The Cubs will be cautious with Schwarber going forward, as they won't rush him back into game action until he feels really good. The team has no fear of structural damage.

"We have a good idea what it was," Schwarber said. "It is a quick turnaround, but it's just something that didn't feel good out there after I made the throw. When I took my at-bat, I felt I couldn't get after it running-wise."

Caution is always the first word that comes to mind with spring training injuries, and Schwarber and the Cubs are on the same page with the season still more than three weeks away.

"We just decided to shut it down and take care of it as soon as possible," Schwarber said.

"We know it is nothing serious, it's nothing significant. There is nothing that will hold me back an extended period of time. This is a day-to-day thing. I feel really good right now. We will see what tomorrow brings. Today will be a light day, but if I can get back tomorrow, I want to be back there."

Schwarber has split his time between left field and catching duties this spring. His main focus will be improving his outfield play. Manager Joe Maddon has Schwarber penciled in to catch once or twice a week.
