Levine: Cubs Top Pitching Prospect Edwards Shut Down For 2 Weeks

(CBS) The overall news was good Friday for the Cubs and top pitching prospect C.J. Edwards, who had complained of a stiff right shoulder after throwing a bullpen Wednesday. Team officials summoned the 22 year-old-pitcher to Chicago for an MRI and to see team doctors, and tests revealed there was no structural damage detected in the examination. The problem is simply fatigue and soreness.
The Cubs have said that Edwards will rest and allow the inflamed shoulder to cool down for two weeks before he starts a throwing program. Edwards is 1-0 in four starts this spring at Double-A Tennessee with a 2.61 ERA.
The young pitcher is considered to be one of the five top prospects in a talented group of minor league players developing in the Cubs system. He was acquired with Mike Olt in a trade last July for right-hander Matt Garza.
