Levine: Bonifacio Still A Cub -- For Now

By Bruce Levine-

(CBS) Utilityman Emilio Bonafacio is still a member of the Cubs despite being held out of Wednesday's loss against the Rockies. Bonifacio was told by his agent that the Cubs were holding him out of the game due to the fluid trade market for the player.

"There is nothing I can do about this but wait," Bonifacio said after the game.

The Giants, Orioles, Mariners and Reds all have expressed interest in Bonifacio. Early Wednesday evening, a report out of San Francisco said the team had released veterans Dan Uggla and Tyler Colvin. Both reports proved false, although Colvin was sent to Triple-A to clear one spot on the 25-man roster. The Giants trying to replace lead-off man and center fielder starter Angel Pagan, who is  on the disabled list.

Bonifacio missed a month with a strained oblique before rejoining the Cubs on July 23. He's hitting .400 since returning to the lineup.  Asked if he would like to go to a contender, Bonifacio said "sure."

"You want to be a part of that," he said. "Right now I am still a member of the Cubs, so I have to keep playing for the Cubs."

Bonifacio was signed to a one-year deal with Chicago in late January. He can declare free agent status in November of this year.

The non-waiver tradedeadline is at 3 p.m. Thursday.
