5-Alarm Fire In Vacant Cicero Warehouse Spreads

CICERO, Ill. (CBS) -- Firefighters are battling a 5-alarm fire that has consumed a vacant warehouse and spread to a nearby business in Cicero.

The warehouse is located at 1843 54th.

Cicero firefighters were joined by Chicago Fire crews and units from surrounding suburbs.

It was a tough fight in sub-freezing temperatures made even more difficult when flames spread to the Central Steel Fabricators plant next door. Flames believed to be fueled by chemicals roared out of the roof.

"With the ice conditions, right when you open up a hose line, the streets are a sheet of glass. We're falling, everybody is trying the best they can," said Cicero Fire Chief.

The Cicero Animal shelter is just to the east of the blaze but officials said the animals were not in jeopardy.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
