Lansing Spinach Supplier Closing Shop

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A south suburban farm that is a major supplier of spinach to Jewel grocery stores has told employees it is shutting down after more than 90 years in business.

De Jong Bros. Farm has been in operation in Lansing since 1923, known for its garden fresh spinach.

In a memo to employees – many of whom are family members, including one who's been there for more than 50 years – De Jong Bros said new food laws and government regulations have increased costs, and the Food Safety Modernization Act will further increase costs dramatically.

The company said it has had difficulty procuring and supplying quality spinach for a few years, and said it's with sadness it will cease operations of its spinach packing operation at the end of the day on Friday. About 30 employees will be out of work.

A source said it was like a funeral at the farm on Friday. Owners have yet to comment.
