Lansing Cop Shot Responding To Robbery, Suspect Killed

(CBS) – A police officer in south suburban Lansing was shot Thursday afternoon, and the suspect believed to have shot him was killed.

The incident occurred in a strip mall at 167th and Torrence. Police say a man tried to run off after stealing an item from the Ultra Foods there. The responding officer caught up with the suspect, and a struggle ensued.

The suspect shot the officer in the lower leg, and the armed male white suspect was subsequently shot a second officer, Lansing village spokesperson Fabian Newman said.  The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The injured officer reportedly was expected to make a fully recovery.

Illinois State Police are investigating the police-involved shooting, as is usual, village officials said.
