Lake Michigan Water Levels Up But Still Below Long-Term Average
(CBS) -- Boaters are happy, beachfront homeowners maybe a little less so, as Lake Michigan recovers from last year's record low levels, reports WBBM's John Cody.
Federal water scientist Anne Clites says the numbers are clear.
"It is 14 inches as of today, more than 14 inches higher than last July. However, it is still about four inches below its long-term average level for July," said Clites.
Clites at NOAAs Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab says last year's cool fall and brutal winter that piled snow on ice and slowed evaporation led to water level recovery in Lake Michigan.
She says still cold water could produce higher levels again in Lake Michigan next year, but she says Lake Michigan is still below its long term average.
