What The Tut? Priceless Beard Broken, Hastily Repaired

(CBS) -- We've all made mistakes, and sometimes we try to cover them up.

Eight museum workers are now charged in Egypt for messing with the boy king.

The international scandal brings back memories for one Chicago area woman, who saw the treasures of King Tut when they were on display at the Field Museum.

Some camped out overnight in 1977 to see the treasures during the blockbuster exhibit.

"It was just thrilling," Kathleen Haefliger, an associate professor at Chicago State University, tells CBS 2's Brad Edwards.

To this day, she remembers the vivid colors.

Now comes word that one of the prime antiquities, Tut's mask, was recently damaged in Egypt. The beard's mask was knocked off and then hastily re-attached using a spatula and epoxy.

The eight museum workers accused of the bungling have been ordered to disciplinary court for gross negligence.
