John Paul II Relics To Go On Display At Des Plaines Lady of Guadalupe Shrine

CHICAGO (AP) — A lock of hair and other relics of the late-Pope John Paul II will go on display Wednesday evening in Des Plaines.

Elia Rivera of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines said the relics include, "specifically relics of his blood and his hair. And including a rosary that was given to him by Saint Mother Theresa, so it's kind of a double relic in that sense."

There will also be a mass and blessing of the relics in the evening. They'll be given in both English and Spanish.

It's part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, when three children say they saw a vision of the Virgin Mary in Portugal.

John Paul credited the Virgin of Fatima with saving his life during an assassination attempt on her feast day in 1981.

John Paul was the 264th pope of the Roman Catholic Church from 1978 to 2005. His pontificate was among the longest in history. He died on April 2, 2005, at the age of 84. The Polish-born pope was declared a saint in 2014.
