Joe Maddon Is Confident In Willson Contreras' Work With Cubs Pitchers

(CBS) While the Cubs have yet to finalize or hold in-depth discussions on their 25-man postseason roster and playoff rotation, manager Joe Maddon does encourage fans to do this much: Read the tea leaves, share your thoughts at the water cooler, argue about the tough decisions at the bar. It's all in good fun, after all.

One of those discussions the Cubs will be having is how to best utilize their catchers, which will be David Ross, Willson Contreras and possibly Miguel Montero too in the postseason. While Contreras is a rookie who doesn't have any postseason experience, Maddon spoke as if he won't be afraid to use him in any situation. Maddon called Contreras "one of the better throwing arms in all of baseball."

"His progress has been great," Maddon said Tuesday on the Spiegel and Goff Show. "When he catches Jake (Arrieta), don't misjudge him with Jake. Jake's movement is so fabulous sometimes that he'll give any catcher a difficult time. So overall, I think he's been catcher, receiving, framing, whatever you want to call it really well. His blocking has been outstanding. You saw the pick-off in St. Louis ... You saw the throw the other night here. He's been really good, actually.

"The biggest thing for me is to just continue to work his at-bats.

"He's doing great. He's doing great. This guy's a great student."
