Joe Maddon: Addison Russell Will Be Back 'Relatively Soon'

(CBS) Cubs starting shortstop Addison Russell will be available to play Tuesday night when Chicago visits San Francisco, but manager Joe Maddon doesn't plan on using him after he sat out Monday's win against the Indians with a groin strain. Russell's life is busy on the home front as well, as he and his fiancee welcomed a newborn child into the world Monday too.

"He's not going to play today, but he's fine," Maddon said in an interview with Jason Goff and Barry Rozner on 670 The Score. "It's not going to be an extended period of time. He'll be available to play tonight, but I'd rather give him an extra day between the baby and the groin strain. I've been talking about it to the press a lot lately, trying to get him off his feet and not pushing him now too hard going into September. So like in some perverse way, this is all working out well, the fact that the injury's not bad, the interruption just based on life with having a baby and getting him out (for some rest).

"He's going to be back relatively soon."

Russell suffered the injury Sunday in a win against the Braves. Starlin Castro played shortstop in place of Russell on Monday, and recently promoted Tommy La Stella can man second base.
