Jockey, Horse Injured During Race At Arlington Park Racetrack
CHICAGO (CBS) -- An Arlington Park racetrack jockey was hospitalized and his horse was injured after an unusual accident during a race on Saturday.
Chris Emigh, 45, was thrown from Fitz's Storm as they were coming around the far turn, when the 3-year-old horse suddenly ran through the temporary turf rail instead of running alongside it.
Trainer Scott Becker said the horse apparently became distracted by something he saw but, what that was, "we'll never know."
"Obviously, he seen something. There's a lot of people there that day, big day down in the far turn. They got food trucks, and a picnic area. You just don't know," he said.
Becker says Fitz's Storm suffered a cut artery in a leg which was stitched up. He said the horse should be able to race again if there's nothing else wrong with him, but that won't be known until the horse is taken back to the track.
Emigh suffered a concussion, a broken thumb, a broken toe, and a cut above his eye which needed stitches. He'll be recovering the next 6 to 8 weeks.
