Jason Heyward Arrives 10 Days Early For Cubs Spring Training

(CBS) The Cubs aren't supposed to report for spring training until Feb. 20, but perhaps the excitement for 2016 was too much for Jason Heyward.

On Wednesday, the Cubs' $184-million offseason prize arrived 10 days early to Mesa, putting on his new Cubs gear and taking the field. Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer predicted during the team's annual fan convention last month that players would arrive early in anticipation of the new season.

Heyward was signed by the Cubs on Dec. 11 on an eight-year, $184-million deal, one of the most lucrative additions for any team this offseason. The Cubs have yet to commit to Heyward in either center or right field, a decision that should emerge in spring training.

In 2015, the Cubs recorded 97 wins and reached the NLCS. The team added Heyward, Ben Zobrist, John Lackey and more to its core.

The Cubs' first spring training game comes on March 3.
