Jailed Suspect Attacked Cook County Correctional Officer: Sheriff

(STMW) -- A murder suspect being held at the Cook County Jail has been charged with attacking a correctional officer on the way to a court hearing last week.

Samuel Salas, 25, punched a correctional officer several times in the head on the way to court on the morning of June 4, according to a statement from the Cook County sheriff's office.

The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital, according to the sheriff's office.

Salas, who was booked into the jail in January 2014 on multiple charges including murder, has now been charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, he received an additional $75,000 bond for the new charge. His next court hearing is June 29.
