Jackie Robinson West Given Heroes' Welcome In Return To Chicago

(CBS) -- The Jackie Robinson West All Stars arrived back in Chicago to a heroes' welcome Monday after winning the U.S. Little League Championship in Williamsport, Pa. this weekend.

Even though the team came up short against South Korea in the world championship game, a large and festive crowd greeted the team at Midway Airport, with balloons and goodie bags from Nuts on Clark. The crowd was chanting "Champs" as the players filed off the plane.

The Chicago Fire Department gave the team a salute by firing water cannons over the plane after it touched down.

"This is unreal, but it is beautiful to see the support they, the kids, are getting," head coach Darold Butler told CBS 2's Derrick Blakley.

After leaving Midway Airport, the U.S. champs made the trip back to Jackie Robinson Field with a police escort. They were greeted by a large crowd, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The city will honor the team with a parade and rally on Wednesday. It will start with a rally at 9 a.m. at Jackie Robinson Field on the South Side followed by a parade to Millennium Park where there will be a rally at 11 a.m.
