Iowa Wrestler Sammy Brooks Credits Big Ten Title To His Mullet

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Rome, as they say, wasn't built in a day.

And neither was champion wrestler Sammy Brooks' mullet.

Sports fans learned this during a hilarious interview after Brooks won the Big Ten wrestling title over the weekend. Fans also discovered that key to making a champion isn't hard work and dedication.

It's a good haircut.

"These fans just respond really well to a good haircut, so that's what I was working on coming in here, making sure I had it fluffed and feathered the right way," Brooks told the Big Ten Network. "I think the fans saw my hard work."

The interviewer then tried to get Brooks to talk about his consistency and trust in himself.

Like a seasoned politician, Brooks wasn't thrown off message and stuck to his talking points.

"I gain trust every time my hair grows a little more, and a little more I trust in myself and my mullet, so it's a process, you know,"a completely straight-faced Brooks said. "You can't grow a great mullet in a day. You can't win a Big Ten title in a day."

Brooks, who grew up in west suburban Oak Park, wrestles in the 184-pound division for perennial wrestling powerhouse, the University of Iowa.

All hail, the mullet!
