Man arrested after claiming he had pipe bomb in his bag at O'Hare Airport

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was arrested Tuesday morning at O'Hare International Airport, after claiming to have a pipe bomb in his bag.

Police and Transportation Security Administration officials said, around 5:45 a.m., a ticketed passenger waiting at a ticketing counter in Terminal 1 claimed he had a pipe bomb in his bag. He then left the bag and walked away.

Officers then set up a perimeter and cleared the area, redirecting passengers in line at two nearby checkpoints to a third checkpoint.

About an hour later, police determined there was nothing suspicious in the bag. Meantime, officers canvassed the area and found the passenger who had claimed to have a pipe bomb, and took him into custody. Charges were pending Tuesday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear how many passengers were affected by the disruption.
