Police said, just before 2:40 a.m., a 2017 Mercedes SUV was speeding east on Oakton Street, when it crossed into oncoming traffic, and hit two utility poles near Cumberland Avenue.

The driver, 37-year-old Shalom Peters, of Morton Grove, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash caused power outages in the area, and part of Oakton Street was closed for several hours after the crash. Westbound lanes remained closed Tuesday afternoon between Cumberland and Greenwood while ComEd crews make repairs.
